Social Upbringing of Children and the Role of Parents: Study in the Light of Islamic Teachings

Abstract

Child traning is a comprehensive and multidimensional process that forms the foundation of a child’s personality, character, and social behavior. Islam does not confine this training to the domestic sphere alone but emphasizes the importance of manners and conduct outside the home as well. When a child steps into the broader society, he or she is influenced by various social environments, companionships, gatherings, and public interactions. Therefore, it becomes the responsibility of parents and guardians to guide children in accordance with Islamic principles during this external engagements.According to Islamic teachings; children must be nurtured with values such as truthfulness, humility, and respect for elders, cooperation, and justice so that they grow into useful and dignified members of society. The teachings of the Prophet Muhammad ﷺ provide clear principles regarding children’s companionship, interactions, travel, and social relations, all aimed at protecting them from negative influences and fostering a positive moral character. Islamic scholars have also emphasized that parents should train their children to choose good friends, maintain moderation in social activities, and exhibit Islamic manners in every situation.This study concludes that when parents guide their children according to the etiquettes prescribed for behavior outside the home, they not only help them build a respectable individual character but also contribute to the establishment of a peaceful, respectful, and cooperative society. Thus, the ultimate aim of Islamic upbringing is not merely moral development but the creation of a righteous and balanced social order.
