Kashf al-Mahjūb and the Intellectual Legacy of Ali al-Hujwiri: A Critical Study in the Historical and Intellectual Context of Islamic Sufism in South Asia
کشف المحجوب اور حضرت علی ہجویری رحمتہ اللہ علیہ کا فکری ورثہ: برصغیر میں اسلامی تصوف کے تاریخی و فکری تناظر میں ایک تنقیدی مطالعہ
Abstract
This study offers a critical examination of Kashf al-Mahjūb, the seminal work of Sayyid Ali al-Hujwiri—also known as Dātā Ganj Bakhsh—and its role in shaping the intellectual and spiritual foundations of Islamic Sufism in South Asia. Written in the 11th century CE, Kashf al-Mahjūb is widely regarded as the earliest comprehensive Persian treatise on Sufism, combining theological discourse, spiritual instruction, historical insight, and biographical sketches of eminent Sufi figures. This paper analyzes the structure, themes, and doctrinal content of the text to assess al-Hujwiri’s contribution to Islamic intellectual history and the transmission of Sunni orthodoxy through a Sufi framework. The research explores how al-Hujwiri synthesizes traditional Islamic theology with experiential spirituality, thereby presenting a uniquely integrated model of faith, knowledge, and practice. His emphasis on tawḥīd (divine unity), sincerity, ethical conduct, and adherence to Sharī‘ah reflects both a deep-rooted commitment to orthodoxy and a profound spiritual insight. Moreover, the study evaluates the impact of Kashf al-Mahjūb on subsequent Sufi scholarship and its pivotal role in establishing a doctrinally sound and culturally resonant form of Sufism in the Indian subcontinent. By situating al-Hujwiri’s work within the broader historical and intellectual currents of the time, this paper concludes that Kashf al-Mahjūb serves not merely as a spiritual manual but as a foundational text in the intellectual evolution of Islamic thought in South Asia. It continues to offer timeless guidance on reconciling internal spirituality with external orthodoxy and represents a bridge between classical Islamic sciences and the lived mystical experience.
